■ Why latex?
Long before the creation of Exo Latex, I had been interested in latex for many years, both for its aesthetic aspect and for the kink and culture surrounding latex. Films such as Maîtresse (1976), Irma Vep (1996), The Matrix (1999) and Catwoman (2004), which showcase stunning latex outfits, were triggers. I was also influenced by the cyberpunk aesthetic, particularly through the role-playing games Shadowrun (1989) and Cyberpunk 2020 (1990). Thus, for me, latex is a material whose aesthetic has a futuristic connotation in addition to being associated with a strong female archetype. Moreover, the sensuality of latex, its tactile effect, is also a determining factor in my adoption of this unique material.
■ What led me to create my own latex fashion house?
I simply couldn’t find clothes that I liked and I wanted to bring my own design ideas to life!
Being a multimedia artist and musician, I have always had an interest in creation. And my mother was a seamstress, which may have been a predisposing factor! I started making clothes as a hobby. Over the years, through trial and error, I began to create original patterns that I then developed and refined using the Seamly2d software to easily and efficiently produce custom-made clothing. A pivotal moment in my evolution was discovering the book The Compendium of Rubber Garment Making, which was an invaluable source of information on creating latex clothing. I also experimented with several other materials, notably silicone, which proved to be a complementary material to latex for creating accessories.
■ When did I start Exo Latex?
In 2020, everything was in place to launch Exo Latex: adaptable clothing patterns for custom-made pieces, original accessories, a proven production method… and a pandemic that gave me time to dedicate to it! I thus decided to take the photographs of the models myself to create my first catalog. During my first studio rental, I was lucky enough to meet a photographer who taught me the basics of studio photography. This is how I started in parallel in styling and fashion photography.
Since the launch of Exo Latex in September 2020, success has followed! I have been fortunate to make wonderful creative encounters from various artistic fields: models, dancers, photographers, influencers, musicians, burlesque artists… and dominatrices! Notably, multidisciplinary artist and photographer Jérôme Bertrand, who is now a valuable collaborator on several projects.
Since 2020, I have participated in more than fifty shoots as a designer, photographer, or stylist; in multiple fashion shows and events (including the Montreal Fetish Weekend in 2023); more than twenty publications in international fashion magazines; and collaborations across several countries (Canada, USA, Spain, Germany, etc.).
■ What are my aesthetic influences?
Punk, gothic, and fetish fashion, as well as the ’90s, are part of my signature as a designer. Minimalism is also one of the influences in the design of Exo Latex clothing and accessories. The result is clean shapes and designs with a classic and chic look. The aspect of ease of use and the versatility of the pieces are also taken into account to optimize the experience of people wearing Exo Latex clothing and accessories.
■ What is the creative process during shoots?
During studio sessions, I plan 4 to 5 different outfits per model. Each model has their own personality, energy, and unique shapes that determine the direction of styling and the arrangement of pieces. When I also take on the work of a photographer, I try to capture the present moment through the movement of the models, but especially the light, which is an essential element of a good photo for me.
